Two Rare Anatomical Variations of External Jugular Vein - an Embryological Overview

چکیده
Maxillary and superficial temporal veins unite within the substance of parotid gland to form the retromandibular vein (RMV) which soon divides into anterior and posterior divisions. Anterior division unites with facial vein (FV) at variable distances below the angle of the mandible to form the common facial vein (CFV) which ends by draining into the internal jugular vein (IJV). The posterior division of RMV unites with the posterior auricular vein (PAV) to form external jugular (EJV) vein which runs down the neck to drain into the subclavian vein (SV) (Standring, 2005). There is wide variation in the formation and termination of the EJV. According to Choudhury et al. (1997) in 5% cases FV ultimately drains into EJV. In one case, reported by Prakash & Bhagath (2007), CFV on the left side drained directly into the SV. EJV is superficially visible and easily approachable and so is used very frequently for intra venous cannulation for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes (Prakash et al., 2006). We present here, two rare variations of EJV in regards to its formation, course, termination and communication. CASES REPORT

A Case Report: Variation of the Cephalic and External Jugular Veins
The knowledge of variations in the superficial veins is of clinical importance for the anatomist, radiologists, clinical practitioners and surgeons in order to plan about the operative procedures. Usually cephalic vein drains into the axillary vein. In this case report study the left cephalic vein communicates with the left external jugular vein and made a common trunk at th...
متن کاملThe Different Termination Patterns Of The Facial Vein - A Cadaveric Study
Anatomic and morphologic variations of the facial vein are of immense importance for surgeons doing reconstructive surgery. In view of this surgical significance, 52 adult cadavers (104 sides) were dissected to study the drainage pattern of the facial vein. Eight out of 104 sides (7.7%) showed an anomalous coursing of the facial vein to drain into the external jugular vein. One among these eigh...
متن کاملFacial Vein Draining Into External Jugular vein (Case Report)
Purpose: Circulatory system is very important because of injection, Blood transfer and centeral venous catheter insertion. The superficial veins, especially the external jugular vein (EJV) are increasingly being utilized for cannulation to conduct diagnostic procedures or intravenous therapies. The anomalous drainage of veins is of great significance for vascular surgeons and reconstructive sur...
متن کاملAn anomalous left external jugular vein draining into right subclavian vein.
Knowledge of the varying drainage patterns of superficial veins of head & neck, in particular, jugular veins are not only important for anatomists but also for the surgeons operating at this level and to clinicians in general. The variations are important also for interventional radiologists, who perform trans-jugular procedures, such as port implantations and trans-jugular intra-hepatic porto-...
متن کاملAbsence of retromandibular vein associated with atypical formation of external jugular vein in the parotid region
Veins of the head and neck exhibiting anatomical variations or malformations are clinically significant. Anatomical variation in the external jugular vein is very common. However, anatomical variation in the retromandibular vein is rare. In this paper, we report a rare case of complete absence of the retromandibular vein. In the absence of the retromandibular vein, the maxillary vein divided in...
